A vintage tweed Chanel jacket is one of the most iconic and classic pieces in fashion history. With its mixed flecked colors of rough-surfaced woolen cloth, a tweed jacket is a perfect Fall staple to add to your wardrobe.
Tweed originated in Scotland, long before Coco Chanel first designed her iconic tweed jacket. It is a rough, woolen fabric, of a soft, open, flexible texture, resembling cheviot or homespun, but more closely woven. It is usually woven with a plain weave, twill or herringbone structure. Color effects in the yarn may be obtained by mixing dyed wool before it is spun. (Wikipedia)

Donegal tweed is a woven tweed manufactured in County Donegal, Ireland. “Originally all handwoven, it is now mostly machine woven and has been since the introduction of mechanized looms in the 1950s/1960s. Donegal has for centuries been producing tweed from local materials in the making of caps, suits and vests.” {Wikipedia}

“In the 1920s, Chanel became enamored with tweed after borrowing sportswear from her then-partner, The Duke of Westminster. The designer started a longstanding relationship with Linton Tweeds in Carlisle, originally commissioning tweeds that reflected the colors of the Scottish countryside. These were used to re-imagine the suit, creating boxy silhouettes that, alongside the fabric, continue to be re-purposed and referenced industry-wide in 2016.” {The Culture Trip}
“Mademoiselle Chanel switched factories in the ’30s to northern France and began combining her classic tweeds with wools, silks, cottons, and even cellophane to give them a more high fashion (and lighter weight) style.”

Royal Tweeds
Tweed is also a staple among the Royals. Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, has favored both a one-piece dress as well as a two-piece suit.
Even Queen Letizia of Spain loves a classic tweed outfit.

You have to interpret what’s hot to make it work on yourself. If tweed suits are in, but you’re not a suit kind of girl, wear the jacket with jeans and a pair of Converses.
