Spain is one of Europe’s most visited countries – and for good reason. It’s an incredibly vibrant and diverse country with so much to see and do. That’s why I’ve added this beautiful country to my bucket list, and here are just a few of the many reasons why you should travel to Spain.
The Food
Many people are familiar with classic Spanish foods such as tapas and paella. Visiting this country allows you to try authentic versions of their cuisine. Almost any city you visit in Spain is going to have a great selection of restaurants and markets, but for the true food capital you should visit San Sebastien. It has one of the highest densities of Michelin star restaurants in the world and is home to its own tapas called pintxos.
The Beaches
Spain also sports some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean, where you can try watersports, marvel at amazing sand sculptures, or simply sunbathe. For a fun family vacation, it could be worth trying Marbella, where there are great properties on the beach to rent for a week. Meanwhile, Ibiza may be better suited for groups of young friends wanting to party it up.
The Scenery
The landscape of Spain is also impressive and is made up of sprawling forests and mountains. Some of the most breathtaking sights include the rocky archways of Cathedral Beach and the stunning gorge of Fuente De (which those daring enough can travel over in a cable car).
The most famous Spanish walking route is the Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of St. James. I’ve read that it takes about 30-35 days to hike the Camino de Santiago. I’m not much of a hiker, but this walking route is calling my name. I just hope that one day, eventually, I’ll be able to walk it.
The History
Spain also has a rich history and almost every major city has its own pieces of history to explore. But for a true history lesson, you should visit Seville. From the cathedral to the Alcazar castle complex, there are plenty of chances here to connect with Spain’s past.
The Arts and Culture
Spanish arts and culture has left its mark around the world. From famous artists like Picasso and Dali to music styles such as Flamenco, the country has plenty of art to celebrate. Barcelona should be at the top of your list because it is the best city to travel to when you want to soak up art and culture. This buzzing city is home to incredible art galleries, unique music venues and impressive architectural feats.
The Festivals
Many weird and wonderful festivals are held in Spain every year. There’s the infamous Pamplona Running of the Bulls, the Bunol tomato fight festival {pictured above}, and the Valencia La Fallas {Festival of Fire}, just to name a few. It also hosts some huge music festivals, as well as a number of large traditional festivals dedicated to horses and flamenco.
The Nightlife
Spain’s nightlife is renowned around the world – particularly on the Balaeric islands of Ibiza and Mallorca where you’ll find world-famous DJs touring in some of the biggest nightclubs. Madrid and Barcelona are also home to plenty of bars and clubs. Whether you’re old or young, you’re certain to find the nightlife that suits you.
According to Trip Savvy, the best time to visit Spain is typically in the spring {March to May} or during the fall {September to November}. At these times, you’ll likely find fewer crowds, cheaper accommodations, and the best weather {even for hitting the beach!}.
When you’re planning a European vacation, check out Spain and see what it has to offer. Write out a bucket list of must-see Spanish destinations and check them off, one-by-one!
Have you ever been to Spain? If so, then let me know what must-see sights I should put on my bucket list.
Yours Truly,
Vanessa
