“Why is there this myth? People say, ‘Oh, you are a style icon. You’re ‘French, French, French.’ It’s not true, you know; there are stylish people everywhere.” – Jeanne Damas, Paris-based model, photographer, and fashion designer
What does it mean to be a STYLE ICON?
The dictionary defines a “style icon” as a person or thing that is very well known as being highly fashionable. There are style icons in every part of the world, especially since social media and the internet make it much easier for people to have their 15 minutes of fame.
There are women with iconic style, like Audrey Hepburn or Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, but they had more on their mind that fashion or style or being photographed at a Red Carpet event.
And then there are women whose love of fashion is clearly evident in their every day style choices, like Beyonce, Rhianna, Kim Kardashian West, and Gwen Stefani. And all of these beautiful women are style icons.
Here are ten women who I would label “style icons”.
- Audrey Hepburn
- Emma Watson
- Olivia Palermo
- Marilyn Monroe
- Iris Apfel
- Anna Wintour
- Dita Von Teese
- Victoria Beckham
I love fashion, and I love changing my style, my hair, my makeup, and everything I’ve done in the past has made me what I am now. Not everyone is going to like what I do, but I look back at everything, and it makes me smile. – Victoria Beckham
- Cher
- Blake Lively
Writer Emilia Petrarca made the following observation about what makes someone a fashion icon, on the “Man Repeller” blog: “While celebrities make a conscious effort to shape our culture, it is also possible to be what we call an “accidental” style icon: someone whose personal style is effortlessly enviable.”
Do you have any style icons?
If so, leave me a comment below and tell me who your style icon is and why.
