I recently saw a picture of my friend, Karis, post a great photo of her jumping with excitement on the pink sand beaches of Las Colorados, Mexico. Earlier this year, she flew over this pink sand beach and immediately put that location on her bucket list. I’m so glad she found it!
{Sidebar: Karis is an avid traveler and seeker of new and wonderful adventures. In her blog, Travel ViKarisly, she shares beautiful photos of her travels around the world. You can read more about her in this blog post. I can’t wait until the day that I get to travel somewhere with her! Her itineraries are always full of interesting locations and experiences. It amazes me just how much she can pack into a weekend!}
A beach is a beach, right? NO!!! Pink sand beaches, like other colored sand beaches around the world, are rare. I had only ever hear of one pink sand beach, and that is in Harbour Island, Bahamas. So that got me to thinking… are there other pink sand beaches? If so, where are they and how can I get there?
So after some research, here are my top three “bucket list” picks for must-see pink sand beaches.
First up is Las Colorados, located in the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico.
Next up is the pink sand beach at the Pink Sands Resort in Harbour Island, Bahamas.
So what makes a pink sand beach, like the one in Harbour Island? “A lot goes into making this Pink Sand Beach so… pink. The three-and-a half-mile-long stretch gets its hue from thousands of broken coral pieces, shells, and calcium carbonate materials left behind by foraminifera (tiny marine creatures with red and pink shells) that live in the coral reefs that surround the beach.” (Source: Google)
Finally, the Elafonisi Beach in Greece.
There are several other pink sand beaches. You can check out Vacation Idea, the dream vacation {online} magazine, to check out 12 of the best pink sand beaches around the world. According to Conde Naste Traveler, there are pink sand beaches, orange sand beaches, and even green sand beaches… but I think the pink sand beaches are my favorite!
Have you been to a pink sand beach? Have you dipped your toes in the turquoise waters while walking along any of the pink beaches around the world? I’d love to hear all about it, so leave a comment below!
Yours Truly,
Vanessa
