Capri, Italy. This small island draws me in like a moth to a flame. Capri has always been one of the most cosmopolitan islands in the Mediterranean, and is beloved by celebrities and international jet-setters.
Capri, an island in Italy’s Bay of Naples, is famed for its rugged landscape, upscale hotels and shopping, from designer fashions to limoncello and handmade leather sandals. One of its best-known natural sites is the Blue Grotto, a dark cavern where the sea glows electric blue, the result of sunlight passing through an underwater cave. In summer, Capri’s dramatic, cove-studded coastline draws many yachts.
Depending on your mode of ferry transportation, you’re looking at either a 40-minute to an 80-minute ferry ride from Naples, Italy, to the Island of Capri. It’s just a 25-minute ferry ride from Sorrento. Or if you want to dramatically cut your time down, then book a helicopter and arrive on the island in style.
Whether you take a day trip to Capri or decide to spend several days on this idyllic island, they say the best time to go is from the beginning of April until mid-June and then from the beginning of September until mid-October. Looking for a pretty comprehensive guide to Capri? Then check out the guide from The DC Darlings.
They detailed the luxury hotel they stayed in as well as listed some things to do around the area. If boating is your thing, then you may want to hire a private boat and sail around the island. Then you can can swim in the different grottos and caves. If you like to hike, then you can hike up to Villa Lysis and Villa Jovis. I’ve read that hiking up to these 2,000-year-old Roman ruins are totally worth it! Do you just want to relax on the beach, lounging on a comfy chaise lounge underneath a fancy umbrella? Then head to La Fontelina Beach Club. Their blue and white striped umbrellas make this one of the most picturesque beach clubs on the island. One of the best views not to miss is from Via Krupp (below), a long winding road that leads to Marina Piccola, which overlooks the famous Capri rocks, the “Faraglioni.”
So now that you have your days planned, what are you going to eat? Well, I don’t eat seafood, but I’d be willing to try something fresh just for the adventure. The island has a great selection of restaurants, including a several offering seafood as well as pizza. If you like a little limoncello with dinner, then eat at Da Paolino Capri, where you’ll dine underneath a canopy of lemon trees. Then for dessert, try some tasty gelato in a warm waffle cone. They also cook with fresh herbs.
The young couple {Ashwini and Neetan} behind the blog, Hopping Miles, put together a great blog post about their trip to Capri. Read all about their day trip to Capri, which details their stops at the pebble beach at Marina Grande, Blue Grotto, Monto Solaro, and La Piazzetta, or the central square in Capri.
