What is your dream job? What job would you like to try, if only for one day? Do you love your job, but wish you could do something else as well?
Let me start today’s post by saying that I really enjoy my job as a Registered Medical Assistant. I enjoy those I work with, and I enjoy the job in general. I’ve been a Medical Assistant since 2002. I guess you could say that it is now more than a job… it’s a career.
That being said, I still think of myself as that awkward 20-something young lady, fresh out of college, with hopes and dreams of having this job or that job, but mostly I dream about being a writer (published and paid). I know, I know… I write on my blog every day, but I’m not getting paid to blog (at least not yet anyway).
As long as I continue to feel like I’m 22, I’m going to continue to fantasize about my dream job. So here is a list of a few of the dream jobs I’d like to try someday (in no particular order):
1) Actress… My husband says I’m a drama queen. I have been known to cry at the drop of a hat. And I think I have a knack for comedic timing. On certain afternoons, I am known to entertain my co-workers with my comedic skills! My memorization skills are lacking, but with enough time and practice, I think I’d make a pretty good actress. The only downside is that I’m not 20-something… I’m 43. I mean, really — who wants to take a risk on a 40-something wanna-be actress? However, if there is someone out there who would take a risk on me being in their movie, TV show, independent film, video (not x-rated, of course)… then I’m your woman!
2) Model… What young girl doesn’t look at the cover of all the magazines and dream of wearing the pretty clothes, traveling around the world, walking the catwalks for Chanel, Prada, or any other Fashion House, or having their make-up and hair done. And to top it off, they actually get paid to wear all of those clothes, travel the world, walk the catwalks, and wear make-up and get their hair done! I’ve seen a couple of documentaries about models and I know it’s a rough life filled with eating disorders, drugs, and alcohol. Because I love food too much, I’d be more of a “plus-size” model… and I’m okay with that! So if there is someone out there who would like to take a risk on me – a 43-year-old plus-size wanna-be model – email me!
3) Event Planner… I love event planning. If I could make a living at it, I would totally do it! I love planning events and organizing all the details – from the flowers and food, to the location and the attire. I spent almost six years in Public Relations and I am a “people person” (I know, so cliche, right?). I also like to sniff out good deals! I’ve planned a couple of weddings and I’ve planned a couple of anniversary and birthday parties. In fact, I planned my grandmother’s 90th birthday party a few years ago! It was fabulous! I wrote to all her family and friends and asked them to send her a birthday card, because I wanted to give her 90 cards for her birthday. We didn’t quite get 90, but we got a card from both Betty White (yes, that Betty White) and President and Mrs. Obama. So if there’s anyone out there that would like to take a risk on me to plan an event for them, email me!
4) Chef / Pastry Chef… I love food! Not seafood, but almost every other type of food! And I love to cook and bake. If I could afford to go to culinary school, I’d go. I have even entered those contests from Olive Garden where you can enter to win “a week in Tuscany to train with one of our master chefs.” Needless to say, I haven’t won any contests like that. I would love to train with a chef, experience new foods and new tastes. So if there are any chefs or pastry chefs out there who would like to train me for any length of time, I’m game!
5) Personal Assistant… I have kind of – in a way, at one time or another – already worked as a personal assistant, but I’ve not actually had the title of “personal assistant”. Of course, I’d love to be a Professional Personal Assistant to a celebrity and because I am a loyal, hard-working individual, I learn quickly to anticipate the needs and wants of my employer. And because I work in the healthcare industry, I understand the importance of confidentiality. I’d love to work with Richard Branson; or Robert Redford (or the Sundance Institute); or Matt Damon; or Tom Hanks; or Ron Howard; or Jennifer Garner or Ben Affleck; or Justin Timberlake; or George Clooney; or Sandra Bullock; or Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt; or Jane Lynch; or Cosmopolitan Editor Joanna Coles; or Karl Lagerfeld; or Gwenyth Paltrow; or the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton; or heck, I’d even work for Naomi Campbell… just to name a few. I’d even love to work for my friend, Kinna McInroe-Luijten, who is an actress in L.A.! So if anyone knows if these people, or anyone in the entertainment industry (film, movie, magazine/publishing) is in need of a fan-freaking-tabulous and loyal personal assistant, email me!
6) Travel Writer… I am already a writer, but I’d love to be a travel writer. I’d love to experience new places, new people, new things. I’d love to have a passport full of stamps and a million stories to go with those stamps! If anyone knows someone who is looking for a travel writer, email me! In 10th grade, my friend, Stacy Kendrick, and I were going to travel the world and I was going to write for National Geographic and she was going to take all the photos for my stories. She did get to travel the world, without me, of course. Her photographs are awesome and anyone who knew her would agree! She passed away a few years ago and I miss her dearly!
7) Freelance Writer for a Magazine or Online Magazine… I would love to snag a plum writing position at a fashion magazine, covering fashion shows, new and innovative beauty products, traveling the world to interview celebrities or inspirational people. I would even love to have a column in a magazine, like Ashley Graham or Nicolette Mason.
What it boils down to is this — my dream job is to be a writer. When I was younger, I wanted to be a writer. I started writing short stories (albeit, cheesy juvenile short stories) and poems. I even told one of my 12th grade English teachers that I wanted to be a writer. She gently patted me on the shoulder and said I didn’t have what it took to be a writer. Needless to say, I graduated from college with an English degree and started working as a news reporter for a newspaper. A few months after I started writing for a small town newspaper, I returned to Biloxi for the homecoming game. I bumped into that English teacher and reintroduced myself to her. When she asked me what I was doing, I proudly said. “I’m a writer.”
Although I have lost my way a few times and veered off the writer’s path, my one true love is still writing, and it will always be writing. Regardless of what career I currently have or what job I’m working, I will always be a writer. So thanks for stopping by my blog and reading my blog posts!
So, what job or jobs would you love to try your hand at one day? I’d love to read all about it! Leave me a comment below about your dream job!
Yours Truly,
Vanessa
