Take Me Back to the 80’s (Movies, that is)

What better way to spend time with your friends and family this summer than to watch some classic movies from the 1980s. Most people my age remember some of the classic movies of our generation, especially the ones from the 80s. Those were some classic movies! Of the some 31,000+ movies that were made between 1980 and 1989, here is a short list of some of my favorites.

We had the John Hughes movies, such as The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Some of my other favorite movies include The Princess Bride, Dirty Dancing, Dead Poet’s Society, Empire of the Sun, Can’t Buy Me Love, A Christmas Story, Footloose, Stand By Me, and Steel Magnolias, just to name a few!

Who Framed Roger Rabbit was the first movie that I saw in a movie theater. Weekend at Bernie’s was the second movie I saw in a movie theater. (Thanks Mom!!)

John Hughes directed some of my favorite movies, including The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Pretty in Pink, all of which starred my favorite redhead, Molly Ringwald. Not only did I want to be in detention with those characters, but I wanted some hunky senior to remember my 16th birthday when my family forgot, and I wanted to design my own pink dress and have the most popular guy in school fall in love with me (with my quirks and all).

I fell in love with Ralph Macchio in The Karate Kid. My friend, Carson, made me watch Empire of the Sun, but it was a moving story of survival and it has become one of my favorite movies. And what Christmas season is not complete without watching Peter Billingsley as Ralphie in A Christmas Story, one of the most classic Christmas movies ever!

John Cusack has got to be one of my favorite actors. He starred in several classic 1980s movies, but I think my favorite is Say Anything. Who of us, ladies, didn’t want him standing outside our house holding up a boombox, blaring Peter Gabriel, “In Your Eyes.” And who doesn’t love McDreamy, a.k.a. Patrick Dempsey. He went from nerd to hunk in Can’t Buy Me Love. And what about Meg Ryan’s scene in When Harry Met Sally. Can I just say, “I’ll have what she’s having.”

When Patrick Swayze said, “Nobody puts baby in a corner,” he made my generation want to dance like they did in Dirty Dancing. And if dancing was prohibited now like it was in Footloose, I’d be in a world of hurt.

“Oh Captain, my Captain.” The late Robin Williams portrayed an outstanding English teacher in Dead Poet’s Society, and I would have enjoyed having him as a teacher. “Love, true love…”, a great line from the classic fairytale love story, The Princess Bride.

Gosh, I love movies and these are just a few of my all-time favorite movies. Pick out some of your favorites and share them with your family this summer.

What are some of your favorite movies from your generation? I’d love for you to share your favorite movies from the 70s, 80s, 90, or later. Just leave your comments below. Maybe, just maybe, I’ll discover some new movies that I haven’t seen before!

Yours Truly,
Vanessa

    1. I still love John Cusack. He is sich a wonderful actor. I hope the remake of Dirty Dancing is good. I just wish Patrick Swayze were alive to make a cameo in the movie.
