This weekend, instead of passing out candy on Halloween, my husband and I spent time locked up in the darkenss of our home watching movies. We were not in the mood for anything too serious (he didn’t have the energy to concentrate) or too scary (I don’t have the energy to be scared out of my wits), so we opted for a couple of comedies featuring some funny leading ladies.
First up was Spy, featuring the often foul-mouthed Melissa McCarthy.

Melissa McCarthy was hilarious as a spy’s assistant-turned-spy in this comedy co-starring Jude Law, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, Allison Janney, Miranda Hart, and Bobby Cannavale. McCarthy plays CIA analyst Susan Cooper who helps Bradley Fine (played by Jude Law) avoid danger. However, she Fine is assassinated by Bulgarian arms dealer Rayna Boyanov (played by Rose Byrne), Susan volunteers to go undercover to help capture Boyanove and avenge Fine.
McCarthy excels as slapstick comedy and can deliver hilarious one-liners with the best of them. What was even funnier was the dialogue of Jason Statham’s spy character, Rick Ford.

Then we watched Hot Pursuit, featuring the Southern sweetheart Reese Witherspoon and the sexy Columbian Sofia Vergara.

Reese Witherspoon stars as Officer Cooper, an uptight and by-the-book cop who tries to protect Daniella Riva (played by Sofia Vergara), the outgoing widow of a drug boss, as they race through Texas pursued by crooked cops and murderous gunmen.
There are some really funny bloopers at the end of both movies, so don’t turn off the movies when the credits start to roll.
These movies may not have fared well in theaters or gotten great reviews, but if you’re looking for a movie that will make you laugh out loud, then either of these movies will hit the spot. They may not be award-winning movies, but they are a couple of good movies with great female leads, especially if you are a fan of either Melissa, Reese, or Sofia.
They are currently available to rent on RedBox. So enjoy a movie date night, pop some popcorn, and settle in for a few laughs.
Have a great day!
