Movie Review: The Judge

My husband and I recently watched The Judge, with Robert Duvall and Robert Downey Jr. We both thought it was a great movie! It’s more than a courtroom thriller. It’s about relationships in and out of the courtroom.

Here is a brief description of the movie, according to IMDb: “Hank Palmer is a successful defense attorney in Chicago, who is getting a divorce. When his brother calls with the news that their mother has died, Hank returns to his childhood home to attend the funeral. Despite the brittle bond between Hank and the Judge, Hank must come to his father’s aid and defend him in court. Here, Hank discovers the truth behind the case, which binds together the dysfunctional family and reveals the struggles and secrecy of the family.” (Written by Warren D’Souza)

As I said earlier, this movie is more than a courtroom thriller. It is about family dynamics. There are several minor story lines in this movie, including the story between Hank and his daughter Lauren, played by Emma Tremblay; Hank and his father and brothers, played by Robert Duvall, Vincent D’Onofrio and Jeremy Dale; and about Hank and his high school sweetheart Samantha, played by Vera Farmiga.

In the movie, Hank has to defend his father, Judge Joseph Palmer, in court. The Judge, as everyone calls him in the movie, is accused of killing a man who years earlier he had sent to prison and who just recently was released from prison. Dax Shepard plays Judge Palmer’s first attorney, C.P. Kennedy, but who is replaced by Hank and put in second chair. Billy Bob Thornton plays prosecutor Dwight Dickham, who Hank knows from a case years earlier. Ken Howard plays Judge Warren, who sits on the bench for Judge Plamer’s case.

The dynamic between Robert Divall and Robert Downey Jr. is awesome. They have wonderful chemistry both on- and off-screen.

Without giving too much away, this movie had me laughing and ultimately, crying. It truly tugged at both my funnbone and my heartstrings, as every good movie should do.

Have you seen The Judge? What did you think about it?

Have a great day!
