“I hope she’ll be a fool – that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.”

The grandeur of The Great Gatsby is captured beautifully by director Baz Luhrmann, with all the glitz and glam of an era where there was a stark contrast between elegance and poverty.
The 2013 version of The Great Gatsby has been airing on HBO this past month, and it still amazes me at how the poshness and elegance of that era was brought to life. Jay Gatsby, portrayed by the handsome Leonardo DiCaprio, and Daisy Buchanan, portrayed by the darling Carey Mulligan, perfectly captured a romance plagued with a million problems.
I, for one, would love to have attended one of Jay Gatsby’s parties. I would have danced the night away. To have lived in an era when there were underground clubs, parties at fancy houses every night, wearing fancy clothes and hats, and all the sparkly jewelry… my, oh my… F. Scott Fitzgerald had some imagination to have authored such a classic masterpiece as The Great Gatsby.
It is said that Leonardo DiCaprio wanted to play Jay Gatsby. He was “drawn to the idea of a man who came from absolutely nothing, who created himself solely from his own imagination. Gatsby’s one of those iconic characters because he can be interpreted in so many ways: a hopeless romantic, a completely obsessed wacko, or a dangerous gangster, clinging to wealth.” (Source: IMDb)

Here are a couple of tidbits that I found interesting:
*Although the book is set in Long Island, the 2013 adaptation was filmed primarily in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

*The beautiful Art Deco jewelry featured in the film is designed by Tiffany & Co. for actors Carey Mulligan, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Elizabeth Debicki.

On a side note, I took my mom to see this movie for her birthday in May 2013 shortly after it premiered in theaters. I think we even splurged and watched in in 3D. We enjoyed this movie immensely! I haven’t seen the 1974 version, featuring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, but I would be interested I seeing these actors portray such wonderful characters.
I would recommend this movie to anyone who is willing to sit through almost two-and-a-half hours of glitz and glam. It really is a spectacular movie filled with great music (by Jay-Z, Frank Ocean, Kanye West, James Brown, Lana Del Ray, and Will.i.Am), beautiful clothes (put together by costume designer Catherine Martin and the costume & wardrobe department), stunning jewelry (Tiffany & Co.), and a fabulous cast (Leonardo DiCarprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Elizabeth Debicki, Isla Fisher, and Jason Clarke).
Have a great day!
