Once again, I’m going through hair envy.
When I see other naturally curly-haired beauties, I think and sometimes verbalize, “I wish my hair looked like that!” So I scoured Pinterest, and googled naturally curly hair styles and celebrities with curly hair, and here’s what I came up with — everyone’s curls are different; everyone styles their hair differently; and not everyone cannot use the same products.
When I look back at old photos of myself, I think about the love-hate relationship I had with my hair and realize that I still have that love-hate relationship but thankfully it’s more one the side of love than hate now. Unfortunately, the sad thing is that,y hairstyle has not changed very much. I used to part my hair on the left side and now I part it on the right side. Oooohhh… Big change, right?
I’m not one for change… Change freaks me out a bit. I was probably more experimental with my hair when I was younger, however, as I slowly came to terms with the fact that I cannot change the texture of my hair, I became less and less experimental and more guarded when I comes to my hair.
If you have curly hair, you know that if you cut an inch off, your hair shrinks up anywhere from 2-4 inches! Needless to say, I cannot carry off short hair. I think of how Keri Russell when from gorgeous long curls to short curls, all while filming her TV show Felicity. Now she has gone over to the dark side and straightens her hair.
Most naturally curly-headed celebrities now bow to the pressure of studios and straighten their hair. Debra Messing. Thandi Newton. Keri Russell. Beyonce. Shakira. Sarah Jessica Parker. Hilarious Burton.
So where am I, along with every other naturally curly-haired woman, supposed to draw our hair inspiration from if every curly-haired celebrity or model we look to for hair inspiration is straightening their hair?
I say, “Embrace the curls! Love the curls!”
Below are four photos of me in all my fuzzy, curly glory. Remember, the 80s and 90s were all about having “big hair.” All of the photos were from my college days. I did cut my hair really short one summer, after my boyfriend of a year broke up with me. I decided them to literally cut that guy right out of my hair. I liked my hair short but I don’t think I’ll ever go short again. Otherwise, my hair was big and frizzy. I used mousse and a diffuser and dried my hair to within an inch of its life.
I rarely cut my hair back then, and I rarely get my hair cut nowadays. But I know that if I kept it trimmed on a regular basis that I would probably have the curls of my dreams. I have tried All sorts of products designed for curly hair: Ouidad; Bumble & Bumble; Infusium 23 and Pantene (these are the two products I’m currently using and liking); Garnier; and several others I can’t remember. Products I would like to try include: Living Proof; DevaCurl; and Wen.
The photos below are where I’m currently drawing my hair inspiration from, and will take to my next haircut appointment. Hopefully, the stylist will help me achieve my dream curls without the need for a curling iron or a diffuser, or without trying to straightened my curls!

Because I’m a little gun-shy about experimenting with cutting my hair, below are some photos of highlights I would love to experiment with.
So here I sit, a 40-year-old curly girl, hoping that one day I’ll have my dream curls!
Have a great Labor Day!
