Befriending a Soldier

President John F. Kennedy once said, “And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”
To me, Memorial Day is not only about the cookouts and outdoor fun with family and friends, but it is a day to remember those who have died in our nation’s service. (www.usmemorialday.org).
Back in March, I sent a care package to a soldier currently stationed in Afghanistan. Earlier this week, I got a letter from her! Her name is Megan and she is scheduled to come back to the states in December. I don’t know much about her but she asked me a lot of questions in her letter. I sat down that same day and wrote her back, answering all of her questions, and even asking her some questions.

I got her name and address from the website AnySoldier.com, and writing to her makes me feel like I’m back in elementary school when my class wrote to pen pals in another state or country. It’s exciting!

In the first care package, I sent a pack of brightly colored Under Armour socks. She stated that she shared the socks with the other girls in her platoon and that the socks make her feet feel “like they are being continually hugged!” I’m glad she and her friends are enjoying the socks!

Of course, I didn’t expect her to write back, but I’m glad she did. Now she will know that there are strangers out here who support her and her fellow soldiers.

If you and your friends, or your church group or work group, want to support a soldier this year, just go to www.AnySoldier.com and sign up. You can re-read my blog – “Paying it Forward in March” – and see how I signed up with AnySoldier.com.

I’m mailing off another small care package to Megan and hope it brings a smile to her and her friend’s faces again. Of course, I’ll keep you posted on this new friendship. And if you sign up with AnySoldier.com, I’d love to hear about your experience and your new friendship!

Supporting our troops needs to more than just words… put some action behind your words and support a soldier!

I hope everyone has a safe Memorial Day weekend… and don’t forget to thank a soldier, any soldier, for their service!
