I sat down at my desk this evening with the plan to compile a list of a few of my favorite actors and actresses; however, as I started jotting down names, the list grew longer by the second! So here’s “Part I” of my list… The Actresses (in no particular order)!
1. My favorite Elizabeth Taylor movie is The Taming of the Shrew, which I saw in junior high school English class after we read the play. Even in black and white, she was gorgeous.
2. Judy Garland’s most famous role is probably that of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Her acting and singing was great!
3. Angela Lansbury will always be Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote, but I will remember her for her role in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, which – like Mary Poppins – blends live action and animation and brings inanimate objects to life.
4. And speaking of Mary Poppins, Julie Andrews sang her way into my heart with “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” which has to be one of my most favorite words! Another favorite is The Sound of Music.
5. Meryl Streep can do it all, am I right? She can sing and dance as proved in Mama Mia! and can pull off an ice queen magazine editor as seen in The Devil Wears Prada. She has portrayed real people like Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady and Julia Child in Julie & Julia. She has portrayed such wonderful serious roles as Francesca Johnson in The Bridges of Madison County and Karen in Out of Africa, but she has also had a few comedic roles as Jane in It’s Complicated and Lisa Metzger in Prime.
6. Viola Davis was pure gold in her role as Aibileen Clark in The Help and she was Julia Roberts’ best friend, Delia, in Eat Pray Love, but she’s primarily known as a stage actress. She has even won a couple of Tony Awards.
7. I could not mention The Help without mentioning Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer. She has been cast in many “supporting roles” in TV and movies for years, but her portrayal of Minny Jackson made her a household name.
8. Glenn Close took stalking to a whole other level when she killed and boiled a bunny in Fatal Attraction. Like Meryl Streep, Glenn Close has portrayed beautiful and memorable characters over the years, and most recently she stepped into a man’s shoes for her role in Albert Knobs.
9. Sandra Bullock’s personal life was put on display after it was discovered that her unfaithful ex-husband, Jesse James, cheated on her while she was filming The Blind Side. But in true “American sweetheart” fashion, she brushed herself off and bounced back with her moving portrayal of a wife and mother whose husband died in the World Trade Center on 9/11 in Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. In my opinion, her status as one of American’s sweethearts was secured with her portrayal of Gracie Hart in Miss Congeniality.
10. Another one of America’s sweethearts is Julia Roberts. Her role as Vivian Ward, a “prostitute turned pretty woman” in Pretty Woman, made every woman want the fairytale ending. She can play any role, whether it be comedic (My Best Friend’s Wedding or Runaway Bride) or serious (Erin Brockovich or Stepmom).
A few of my other favorite actresses include: Natalie Portman (Where The Heart Is), Mila Kunis (Forgetting Sara Marshall), Kate Hudson (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days), Jennifer Garner (Catch and Release), Kate Winslet (The Holiday), Angelina Jolie (Wanted) , Jennifer Aniston (The Good Girl), Emma Stone (Easy A), Sofia Vergara (Modern Family), Reese Witherspoon (Sweet Home Alabama), Cameron Diaz (There’s Something About Mary), Drew Barrymore (Never Been Kissed), Diane Keaton (The Family Stone), Helen Mirren (Calendar Girls), Susan Sarandon (Bull Durham), and Stockard Channing (Six Degrees of Separation).
Tomorrow I’ll tackle Part II and list a few of my favorite actors!
