It’s a brand new year…
January 2, 2012.
Greetings and Salutations!
I decided to start a blog this year and I’ve already let one day slip past me. But I blame procrastination and a hint of fear for not starting this blog yesterday. I read an email from Script Magazine that encouraged me to “write more,” which is one reason I started this blog. Derek Haas, one-half of the screenwriting duo responsible for such great movies as “3:10 toYuma,” “Wanted,” and most recently “The Double”, encouraged me to “find my voice.” So here goes… I’ll most likely cover a wide array of topics – fashion, news, medical mumbo-jumbo, television, movies, books, religion, politics, etc.
But today’s topic is about New Year’s Resolutions. I didn’t set any New Year’s Resolutions per se… I just decided that this year I would do two things every month – (1) I’ll do something nice for someone else, whether I know them or not, and (2) I’ll do something nice for myself. I know the second “resolution” may be a bit selfish, but I think that’s ok. Agree with me or not, but it’s my opnion that everyone needs to treat themselves to something special every now and then in order to be happy. Also, it’s not like I’m saying that ALL I’m going to do is treat myself to something nice every month.
For instance, this month I will be celebrating the big 3-9 and I’m treating myself to a membership with the local writer’s guild. That’s something special for me, considering the fact that I’ve been saying for the past two years that I was going to join the guild. The first meeting is this coming Thursday, the day before my birthday!
Then for my “something for someone else,” I’m going to contact a Facebook friend, Jay Larsen, about volunteering for Random Acts of Flowers. I won’t be able to doing anything during the week, unless it’s during my lunch, but I could do something on a Saturday or a Sunday. So see – it’s not all about ME!
I came up with this idea after I participated in Lent last year. Lent lasts from Ash Wednesday through Easter Sunday and the premise of Lent is to fast or to give up something. It is a season of soul-searching and repentance. So I did two things for Lent – I gave up Diet Coke and took up working out… two things that were good for me. Then after it was over, I got a rosary tattoo around my right ankle. I’ll post a picture later.
Of course I have other hopes for the new year. I hope to exercise more, drink more water, save more money, cook new and different things, gossip less (or stop all together), and write more!
But for now, I’m going to close my first blog by quoting Elaine Liner – “If writers stopped writing about what happened to them, then there would be a lot of empty pages.”
